Prof. Kilita Mkumbo is currently a Chair Parson of Export Processing Zones Authority Board of Directors.

In 2020, Prof. Mkumbo ran in the 2020 Tanzanian general election and won the Member of Parliament seat for Ubungo. Before that he had a brief stint in government as the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water in the Tanzanian Union Government.

Then President of the United Republic of Tanzania H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan inaugural cabinet and he was appointed as the Minister of Industry and Trade, however in July 2023 to date he is serving as a Minster - President Office, Planning and Investment, after a few changes in ministerial dockets.
